2 Engineering Design Process (EDP) Ask Imagine Plan Create Experiment Improve Entry

3 Activity Transition Previously, we considered getting to the moon. Now we will consider “landing on the moon,” and what we do once we get there. Build Lunar Rover Transport Build a Landing Pod for Rover Launch the Rover in the Landing Pod

4 Challenge #5 Carry people and cargo while on the moon. Carry one plastic egg snugly. The egg may NOT be taped or glued into place. Have room for two plastic people. (The people do not land with the rover. They will get in the rover on the Moon and drive it around.) Roll on its own down a ramp for an average distance of 50 cm or more. Be strong enough to hold approximately 5 grams of cargo weight, represented by two Tootsie Roll or other candies inside the egg. Survive the “landing.” This means it should be able to roll down the ramp after the landing, and the plastic egg should not have popped open.

5 Engineering Design Process – (Ask) DO What Design Must DO: Carry People & Cargo while on moon. Carry one plastic egg snugly (no tape/glue). Have room for two people. Hold 5 grams of cargo. Roll down a ramp 50 cm. Ask Imagine Plan Create Experiment Improve Entry

6 CEV Launch. Launch the CEV. Accuracy (hit the target on the floor). Control & Adapt Launch to Improve Results. Be reusable. {Doesn’t Break} Be Repeatable Three launches should have similar/identical results. Changes in force or direction should be predictable and controlable.

7 Engineering Design Process : Imagine What OPTIONs To Consider: For Carrying Cargo {Snugly} For Carrying People For Rolling down Ramp Ask Imagine Plan Create Experiment Improve Entry

8 Engineering Design Process: Plan Capture Design: Draw your Design & Plan Perform Calculations Draw Pictures, Identify Critical Issues Communicate & Coordinate Ask Imagine Plan Create Experiment Improve Entry

9 Ask Imagine Plan Create Experiment Improve Entry EDP: Create & Experiment Create Model  Plan Experiment & Document

10 Ask Imagine Plan Create Experiment Improve Entry EDP: Improve Design Improvements  from Experiments Peer Reviews & Quality Assurance Suggest Ideas Receive Ideas Consider Alternatives

11 Ask Imagine Plan Create Experiment Improve Entry Conclude Pack-Up Design & Supplies  Cart Clean-up Surrounding Area Leave No Trace!
