The Metric System A simple way to measure

What is it??? A system of measurement based on multiples of 10 01 0.010.1 00 0.001

Each Multiple has its own name Milli = 0.001 or 1/1000 Deca = 10 Centi = 0.01 or 1/100 Deci = 0.1 or 1/10 = 1 (no prefix)

Each Multiple has its own name Hecto = 100 Kilo = 1000

Length – “the Meter”  How long is something?  We use the Meter to measure the length of objects  A meter is almost equal to a yard in the English System * 1 yard=.9144 meter, 1 m = 3.28 feet, 1 yard = 3 feet

The Meter Comes in Different Sizes MillimeterCentimeterMeterKilometer 1 inch = 25.4 mm1 mile = 1.6 km1 m = 3.28 ft1 inch = 2.54 cm

1 Centimeter 10 Millimeters 1mm Is the same as

1 Meter 100 Centimeters Is the same as

100 Centimeters 1000 Millimeters Which is the same as 1 Meter Is the same as

1 Kilometer 1000 Meters Is the same as

Need to Know!!!!  10 mm = 1 cm  100 cm = 1 m  1000 m = 1 km  1000 mm = 100 cm  1000 mm = 1 m  How many mm = 1 km ???

 The “Need to Know” on the previous slide holds true for EVERY unit of measurement in the metric system! You can substitute in gram for meter, or liter for gram… all three have the same exact conversions!  Keep this in mind as you continue through the presentation!

Mass – “the Gram”  Mass is a measure like weight, or how heavy something is.  Measurement like ounces and pounds.  The gram is closest to an ounce in the English System of measurement (1 ounce weighs about the same as a slice of bread, 1 gram = about one paperclip!)

The gram comes in different sizes too! Milligramgramkilogram 1 oz = 28.35 grams 1 pound = 2.2 kg

Volume – “the Liter”  Volume tells how much space an object takes up  Used to measure liquids  Measurement like cups, ounces and gallons  The liter is closest to a quart in the English System of measurement (1 liter = 1.056 quarts, 1 quart = 4 cups)

The Liter comes in different sizes like the meter and gram! MilliliterLiterKiloliter 1 gallon = 3.78 liters 5 ml = 1 teaspoon = 1 cc
