5. History Having its origin in the Post & Telegraph Department established in 1947, the Pakistan Telecommunication Corporation (PTC) was established in December 1990, taking over operations and functions from the Pakistan Telephone and Telegraph Department under the Pakistan Telecommunication Corporation Act 1991. The Pakistan Government's policy to promote competition encouraged private sector participation and resulted in the award of licenses to cellular companies

6. Etisalat & PTCL In 2006, Pakistan's Privatization Commission held open bidding to sell 1.326 billion shares, along with management control of PTCL. The Etisalat International Pakistan, a 100 % owned subsidiary of Emirates Telecommunications Corporation - Etisalat was the highest bidder for a 26 per cent stake in PTCL with a $1.96 (116 rupees) per share offer.
