Types of Aid

Types of Aid Voluntary Aid.Also known as Charity Aid Bilateral Aid. Sent from one country to another. Can be money, equipment, experts. Multilateral Aid.Comes from a central organisation –e.g. the UN or World Bank. Emergency Aid. Usually given following a natural disaster.

Tied aid and Untied aid Tied aid comes with STRINGS attached. This means that aid is given but there are conditions imposed by the donor country. This usually means that the aid has to be spent on equipment bought from the donor country, even although the same equipment could be bought cheaper from another country.

Self-Help Schemes They involve the local community They are usually long term. They involve Appropriate Technology –this means they can be run and repaired cheaply. They make use of local skills and materials The benefits are felt in the local area.

Project –Large scale aid. These schemes are very expensive and need huge amounts of aid. Building a dam and power station They will involve a lot of people at the building stage, but very few after completion. They are unlikely to benefit the local communities. They do often attract foreign business, and so investment into the country.

Emergency Aid This type of Aid is needed after a NATURAL DISASTER. It is SHORT TERM It will be needed immediately It does not last long It does not have a lasting effect on the Development of the country that needs it.

Emergency Aid After a disaster tents would be needed for shelter. Food Water Medicine Blankets These would all be needed immediately.

Aid What kind of resources are being given out here? What organisation do you think would distribute this kind of aid What kind of aid is this?

Emergency Aid Long Term Aid is needed after a disaster to help with the rebuilding. Sometimes the traditional designs of buildings need replaced with something safer.

Military Aid One of the types of Aid is military Aid. This is given by developed countries to “friendly” countries. They would expect to have access to the country in return.

Self- Help Schemes. This particular scheme helped local people to make chairs from weapons after a war. Self –Help schemes are the best type of Aid.Why?

Long Term Projects Bosnia is a country that is recovering from many years of CONFLICT. Because of this, they need help to develop the country in the long term.

Long Term Aid These seeds were given by Oxfam to enable people to make a living from farmland that was devastated in the recent conflict.

Farming aid This farm project in Guatemala in South America is another example of Long Term Aid. It involves the whole community, and so the benefits are felt by the whole community.

Clean Water. This is one of the most vital long term aid projects throughout the developing world. Clean Water prevents people catching many diseases, and slows down Infant Mortality.

Task 1. Look at pages 8 & 9 of Global Eye Aut 02 Read “ New Goals” What are the 5 goals? Read “ New Promises” How is the UK’s Aid Budget divided up? Give details. Read “ Strings” Give 3 problems with Tied Aid, and say how untied Aid is better. Read “New Partnerships” Who should be involved in Aid projects, and why? Read”Barriers to Development and Unfair Trade” Why is debt a problem in the developing world, and how does Trade make it worse?

Aid that works. Look at the activity sheet. Working on your own or in pairs, read the statements and decide which ones will benefit the poor. They can help directly or indirectly. Now decide which of these would be self-help schemes. Mark the boxes on the sheet with a code to indicate this.
