1 Buddhism By: Caroline, Trevor, Alex, Siena, and Madison

2  It was founded by a Hindu Prince, Siddhārtha Gautama. He lived from 563-4483 BCE.  He was searching for the meaning of human suffering.  While meditating under Bidhi tree he became enlightened.  The name Buddha means enlightened one.

3 Countries that Practice Buddhism The primary countries with the largest number of practicing Buddhist are: This was attractive for women because people were more equal under Buddhism. There was no caste system. Women were not discriminated against as much as in Hinduism.

4 Principles of Buddhism There is no supreme being Follow the four noble truths: All life is suffering Suffering is caused by desire One can be freed from desire One is freed from desire by following the Eightfold Path. Eight Fold Path Right Views Right Conduct Right Mindfulness Right Aspirations Right Live hood Right Speech Right Endeavor Right Mediation

5 Goals of Buddhism Divisions of Buddhism  Theravada- main principles based on meditation and simplicity. They also believed that Buddha was a great prophet but not a God.  Mahayana- the main principles were based on rituals. It was also believed that Buddha was a God like deity. To move towards Nirvana which is peace and harmony. The goal is to reach Nirvana/ Inner Peace.

6 Side Notes Bodhisattva- an enlightened being or state of living in which one is enlightened. Sputa- a mound that contains Buddhist relics. Monasteries- buildings reserved for prayer and meditation.
