Mrs. Flowers class, D8 Email: jflowers@montgomerycatholic.orgjflowers@montgomerycatholic.org WordPress: mcpsflowers.wordpress.com/ Classes taught: Introductory Algebra Pre-algebra Honors Algebra 1

Watch the student tutorial before starting at www.hawkeslearning.comwww.hawkeslearning.com. Please enter your email address in the student profile section so you can receive reminders. Most at home assignments will be practice, certifications and WebTests that are online. Program offers audio and visual tutorials as well as an ‘explain error’ function. Your child NEEDS to practice FIRST and use the Hawkes tools or teacher for help if needed before certifying. Please encourage your child to finish certifications and WebTests on time. This can be checked online using their access codes.

More HLS information Recommend working ONLINE only Write email and password down – we will need this for class This is what we will use when we work on Hawkes in class ALL work MUST be neatly shown and labelled in notebook Certifications and WebTests count 15% of grade Expect it to seem harder at first Veritas implications 1. No sharing of access codes---EVER 2. Help on practice is always acceptable and ENCOURAGED 3. Help on Certifications is NEVER acceptable

EXAM Policy Final exams are at the end of each semester They count for 10% of the semester grade 20% for Honor Algebra like the high school The quarter grades indicate progress in class The final semester grade includes: 45% for each quarter AND 40% for Algebra 10% for the final exam 20% for exam

Homework, IN and Notebooks Yes, they have homework almost EVERY night ININ IN is an Interactive Notebook for notes and practice problems ONLY in a composition book Notebooks are required to be organized with all notes in the IN, bell work and Hawkes work WebTests are usually ‘retestable’ with HLS recording the highest grade Certifications – 100% if completed on time – 10% off per day late (Minimum 50%) – 0% if not done or completed

Email REQUESTS 1) ALL students need their original email address and password used for HLS registration. (Call Hawkes if you forgot it.) 2) All students need to have their parents/guardians email address in their Hawkes profile for messages. (Directions are on my WordPress page under HLS info.)

Projects and Tutorials There will be a project assigned every semester Grading will be explained at the time of the project and dependant on its complexity. Tutorials will be available in my classroom every morning from 7:00 am until homeroom starts EXCEPT Mondays because of our faculty meetings. A computer will be available to input certifications if a student was unable to connect to the internet. Students can work on certifications on school laptops during tutorials and advisement.

WHAT: A math program and a science program for all interested problem solvers and science explorers WHEN: After school on alternating Wednesdays until 4:15pm WHERE: D-8, Mrs. Flowers room NEEDED:Interested students, parent volunteers ORGANIZATIONAL MEETING – AUGUST 26 th, after school PARENTS ARE WELCOME TO ATTEND! 9 YOUR CHALLENGE: Talk up math. Suggestions are: look for bad math, balance the check book, play Monopoly, Rummikube, cards, Suduko, puzzles, etc… PRACTICE FIRST on Hawkes. Help your child use the extra help in tutorials or on Hawkes. Keep your child trying. Use ‘explain error’ on Hawkes or send problem to the teacher using ‘Instructor Connect’. Have your child show his work in class or tutorials after you send it. If you were NOT ‘good’ at math, KEEP IT A SECRET.

Of course not! According to Jacob Weatherly a former student who received a full scholarship to Harvard speaking about Mr. Frye’s class, he suffered, struggled, then discovered. The point is that learning requires hard work and commitment. We need to help our students make learning math important. How many times do we correct grammar, but never talk about or play with math?
