17 THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY o A kind of world parliament o All 193 countries are in the GA o The GA meets every September in NYC o It discusses the world’s problems o A country may send more than 1 rep to the GA, but only has one vote o It has been accused of being a “talk shop” i.e. “all words and no action…”

18 Security Council Responsible for world peace Consists of 15 countries 10 non-permanent that rotate every 2 years 5 permanent members – USA, USSR, China, France & Britain Permanent members have the right of veto A 9/15 majority needed to make a decision Controls the UN army It meets in NY and is permanently in sitting It decides on what action to take in the case of a dispute or war It deploys the UN peacekeepers but only if it can be guaranteed of their safety

19 INTERNATIONAL COURT OF JUSTICE Based in The Hague, Netherlands 15 judges chosen as individuals and not based on their nationality Judges serve a 9 year term Countries can take disputes to the ICJ ICJ will not make a judgement on a dispute unless countries bring the dispute to the ICJ

21 Secretariat The main spokesperson of the UN is the Secretary-General The current Secretary-General is Ban Ki-moon of South Korea Secretariat based in NY It employs 1000s of people It does all the admin work of the UN

22 THE ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL COUNCIL Its function is to try and achieve the third UN aim – to stop human suffering It has been much more successful than the other UN bodies There are more than 30 agencies that report to the ESC Examples of these agencies : WHO, FAO, UNESCO, UNICEF This humanitarian work has managed to keep the UN name in tact at times when they have failed at achieving their first two aims Most of their work is in developing countries, particularly Africa
