Exponential growth and 21 st Century Skills 1, 2, 4, 8,16, 32, 64,128, 256, 512,1024… Creative/Divergent Thinking/Imagination Critical thinking/problem solving Leadership skills Collaboration across networks Agility and adaptability to a changing environment Access/Assess/Analyze information Effective oral and written communication

Right Brain/Left Brain Left-brain thinking is logical, sequential, analytical. And there is little question that you need to be pretty good at that stuff to be a pharmacist. But I think most of us would agree that being logical, sequential, and analytical isn't sufficient. Our right-brain thinking abilities - creativity, sensitivity to design and aesthetics, empathy, and contextual awareness - are equally important. Perhaps MORE important today because computers and other forms of automation are able to do the logical, sequential, analytical stuff far better than we humans could ever hope to do. But computers have not yet mastered right brain thinking. So, its time to flex some right brain muscle. We need to spend more time teaching our students how to be creative, think holistically, and relate to people in an authentic manner. – Stuart T. 7 3 CORNER ACTIVITY Corner 1—Motivation Corner 2—Educational Reform Corner 3—Technology/21 st Century

Notes Motivation- There are three aspects of motivation supported by science but rarely utilized in the professional world. Higher incentives do not lead to better results on cognitive tasks. Autonomy-The desire and ability to be self directed Mastery- The urge to get better Purpose- The sense that we are making a contribution

Notes Educational Reform Education has not made significant changes since its inception Everybody has the capability for divergent thinking yet it declines as students progress through the educational system. Aesthetic V Anesthetic (engagement) Radical reform in instruction EDI may not be enough Individualized Learning Plans/Intervention

Notes Technology/21 st Century Skills The fastest growing group of new users of technology are 3-5 year olds Watson 10 hours of playing video games improves visual perception and acuity Brain research is showing that our brains and brain cells are changing and capable of new growth

Summary 3 aspects of motivation for students/staff Autonomy Mastery Purpose Accept and adapt to technology changes as a motivation, challenge, choice, collaborative tool Educational reform 21 st Century Skills Divergent Thinking
