5 Clara Barton was a nurse for the Union army during the war. She had a leadership role in the hospitals on the front lines of battle during a time when few women worked outside of the home. After the war, Barton became close friends with Susan B. Anthony and was part of the womens suffrage movement. She is probably best known for helping to found the American Red Cross. 6 The Emancipation Proclamation was an order by Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War declaring all slaves free. It was not an official law passed by congress, but Lincoln exercised his executive power to free the slaves as a wartime strategy. This applied to anywhere between 3 – 4 million slaves.
