3  In 1837, John Deere, a blacksmith engineered a polished steel plow in his shop in Grand Detour, Illinois, that allowed farmers to cut furrows in the tough soil.  1838- Evolved from John Deere blacksmith to John Deere manufacturer.  1848- The plow business grew and the company moved to Moline, Illinois, where more water and transportation services were available.  1918- Deere bought the maker of Waterloo Boy tractors after many years of investigating tractor production.  1923- Deere produced the Model D tractor which stayed in the product line for 30 years.  1927- Deere produces the combine  1963- John Deere company becomes the world’s largest manufacturer of farm equipment  2012- Celebrated their 175 th anniversary.
