Power of the church…

Influence of the church

Guiding questions: Why did religious communities want to come to New France? What role did the church play in the development of Canadian society?

The move to evangelize In the 16 th century, there were religious wars, such as the crusades. Everyone thought that their own religion was the right religion They truly believed that they had found the Americas, and the native Americans, to create a perfect Catholic society for G-d. They believed it was their duty to convert (evangelize) the natives!

Were they successful????? What do you think? Yes and no…..

Limited success The natives resisted evangelization Only seven Catholic-Amerindian villages were established during the French Regime Amerindians integrated their traditional beliefs in the tenants of Catholicism

Missions Missions served to convert natives. People who worked on missions were called missionaries Missions looked like villages- they had a church, and a few buildings where the missionaries and the natives they were converting lived.

Jesuits As of 1611 Jesuits established in New France. It was their mission to evangelize the natives To achieve this goal, they decided to live among the natives, later founding missions

Disappointing results They believed there needed to be more French Canadians in the colony. If there were more French Catholics- it would be easier to integrate the natives into French society They wanted the natives to have French values, and a sedentary way of life

The founding of Ville-Marie (Montreal) Ville-Marie (today Montreal) was founded in 1642 in order to convert natives. It was placed very close to an Iroquois village (today Kanawake) Because it was so close to the native village, Ville-Marie soon became an important trading post
