5 Major Events Sixty kilometers above the states of Louisiana and Texas, the space shuttle Columbia began to disintegrate on the morning of February 1, 2003.People driving in their cars-or fishing in their boats-avoided fatal injuries as approximately 84,000 pieces of debris-some of it huge-fell to the Earth.

6 Interesting facts Columbia was delivered to the Kennedy Space Center in March 1979. Two years later, April 12, 1981, it lifted off from the Kennedy Space Center to become the first shuttle in orbit. (Space shuttle Enterprise was the programs test vehicle and not equipped for spaceflight.)
