11 Rail Is On The Way

12 Legal Issues Courts forced Los Angeles County to spend $1 billion to buy buses, add service and maintain low fares after class action suit that alleged MTA had established “an expensive, boondoggle rail system … and a dilapidated deteriorated bus system for 94 percent of the riders, 81 percent of whom are people of color. 2005 Class action lawsuit alleging MTC channeled funds to benefit predominantly white rail riders a the expense of bus riders of color. Suit was settled four years later with judge saying funding changes MTC made over four-year period made up for prior difference. Suit claims that regional funding has systematically under-funded inner-city bus and L train service for the benefit of suburban train lines, therefore denying equal transportation access to the region’s minority populations and violated federal and state law. Suit filed on Jan. 6, 2010.
