3 Linear Equation Any equation whose graph is a line – Since a function rule can form a line, a function can be linear – f(x) = 2x + 5

4 Y-Intercept Represented by the variable b The y-coordinate of the point where the line crosses the y-axis Graph y = 2x + 5 to see where is crosses the y- axis. What is its slope?

5 Slope-Intercept Form y = mx + b m = slope b = y-intercept

6 Find the slope and y-intercept 1. y = 3x – 5 2. y = x y = (2/3)x – 3 4. y = -2x

7 Write an equation of the line from the given slope and y-intercept. 1. m = 2/9b = 3 2. m = 0b = 1 3. m = -1/4b = m = 3b = 0

8 Write the slope-intercept form from the graph of the equation

9 Use the slope and the y-intercept to graph the equation 1. y = ½ x y = 2x y = -3/2 x
