1 Military Hardware By Colin Lee-Au

2 North American P-51 Mustang The Mustangs were primarily assisted in escorting bombers on long range sorties such as the B-17 Flying Fortress. Another purpose for the P-51 Mustang was to be a fighter airplane that attacked enemy targets. The Mustang was effective because it could outperform any German airplane. Another way it was effective was because it was able to attack ground targets with bombs and machine guns. Its first mission was on May 10 th, 1942 when the Mustang successfully attacked aircraft hangers at Berk sur Mer in German- held French territory. During the war, they were credited for downing 4,950 German aircrafts. Some Mustang units were deployed in the Pacific and the Far east. North American P-51 Mustang North American Mustang at war

3 Radar The purpose of radars were to track enemy planes in good and bad weather so they can send airplane to attack them. Another purpose was for the British and American military to “see” for hundreds of miles if enemies are coming so they can prepare for battle. It was effective by knowing what the enemy was about to do with their airplanes before it actually happens. It also helped each side so there wouldn’t be as many surprise attacks. This was successfully used when the Germans attempted to conquer Great Britain in their blitzkrieg. Great Britain used radars and took down most enemy planes using it. Example of unsuccessful use of radars was the Pearl Harbor bombing, that the American mistaken the plane on the radar were Americans, but they were Japanese planes that attacked the country. 4 Avro Lancaster (1942) One of the purpose of the Lancaster was to be able to carry lots of bombs as a heavy bomber that can destruct everything. Another purpose was to be a reconnaissance plane, checking what the Axis Power was doing and reporting it to their military leader. The Lancaster was so effective that it bombed some German battleships killing many men on the ship. It was also effective because it killed many German soldiers while in battle. A battle that the Lancaster was in was on November 12 th, 1944 when two Lancaster groups engaged at bombing the German vessel sinking the German KMS Tirpitz shrinking the German Navy. Another battle it was used in was the mega-bomb targeting underground positions destructing dams and destroying the safety for the Axis Powers Flying Avro Lancaster Bombing Avro Lancaster
