Use the information below to construct a dinosaur food web Allosaurus Deinonychus Saltopus Tyrannasaurus Rex Utahraptor CARNIVORES Ankylosaurus Apatosaurus Brachiosaurus Diplodocus Protoceratops Stegosaurus Triceratops Ultrasaurus HERBIVORES PRODUCERS Conifers Leptocycas Gingkos What would happen if the number of producers decreased? Why?

We ate all the plants so the herbivores had nothing to eat! We were poisoned by chemicals which were leached from the soil. The atmosphere or climate changed and the dinosaurs couldn’t adapt. Disease wiped them out. An asteroid hit the earth. What caused the extinction of dinosaurs?

Something killed off all of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. We don't know exactly what it was, but many scientists believe it was a large comet or asteroid that struck the coast of what is now Central America. There were also other possibilities, such as disease, climate change and the rise of mammals.

Wolf creek crater, Australia Chicxulub crater off the coast of Mexico Crater in the Arizona desert (USA) Space radar image of Aorounga crater, Chad in Africa Snow Crater – Manicouagan, Quebec Canada Crater Lakes – Clearwater lakes, Quebec, Canada So what is the evidence for this?

Do these craters only happen on the earth? These are images of lunar craters. This is a south view across Oceanus Procellarum with the large crater, Schiaparelli This lunar crater is known as Timocharis and is 33 kiliometers in diameter.

What affects the size of a crater?

Possible theories for varying crater sizes Varying sizes – dust particles to km Varying composition – rocky, metallic and carbon based Varying speeds Varying angles Varying mass Varying strength.

A test to prove your theory What could you use as a meteorite? What will represent the surface of the earth? How will you make this a fair test?

What affects crater size? How many times will you have to do it? What are you going to record? What do you think you will find out? What are you going to investigate? How will you record your results? How will you make it safe?

Meteorite strike! Start collecting your data Look for patterns as you collect data to check if you are on the right path

New discoveries? What do your results tell you? Have you discovered something new or have you produced good evidence to support your original ideas?

Could this happen?
