2 Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission  Voluntary association of governmental and non-governmental organizations in the Dayton metropolitan region in southwest Ohio  Regional Planning Commission and Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) performing transportation, land use and environmental planning

3 Background Promoting Sustainable Growth for the Dayton Region  We live our lives in a regional way and operate as a region  Region is an economic unit to compete in a global marketplace  Planning decisions in one community impacts surrounding communities and the region as a whole  Issues associated with planning decisions such as traffic congestion and air quality reach beyond local boundaries to cover the entire region

4 In the past, Dayton Region experienced:  Population decline  Increasing suburbanization with urban population density decline  Aging of population and loss of manufacturing-based economy In the future, Dayton Region is expected to see:  Continued suburbanization and urban population density decline  Low population and job growth  Thinning tax base impacting the region to remain sustainable financially, politically, and environmentally

5 How can we make our region more vibrant place? How can we make our region more prosperous? How can we make our region with a better quality of life? Hmmm.. What should we do?

6 Our citizens say…  Improve planning of future developments and transportation to attract economic development, but focus growth to preserve green space and minimize the need for increased auto travel (Transportation Visioning)  Better planning and incentives to preserve natural resources; and policies that promote an integrated, fiscally-responsible and balanced approach to development (Transportation Visioning)  77.6% of the general public support comprehensive regional land use planning (Study of Regional Cooperative Strategies )

8 Guiding Principles Public Outreach and Engagement Partnership with Other Non-Government Organizations Leadership Support Partnership with Local Governments

10 Developing a Shared Vision 2040 Regional Growth Framework will:  Identify areas that are preferred and appropriate for future development, redevelopment, or preservation  Be a roadmap for the region to better achieve consistency between future transportation infrastructure investment and land development and enhance environmental quality  Serve as a guideline and resource for the future land use policy and/or plan development efforts of communities in the Region
