The Laboratory for the Study of Collaboration and Learning (LSC&L) is a state-of-the-art digital video acquistion and production center that provides researchers with the capability to 1) do multiple-perspective and fully synchronized field audio and video recordings, 2) edit the recorded video and audio streams into usable data, and 3) produce and reproduce recordings in VHS, SVHS, HI-8, miniDV and DVCAM formats, as Quicktime files and as multi-angle DVDs. 11 CHALLENGE: How to make multi-perspective data acquisition and audio/video recordings of digital interfaces, interaction SOLUTION: Use off-the-shelf hardware and software to produce an integrated editing system with time code synchronization. Cameras and recorders, audio and video editing software and hardware were all capable of recording and processing time-code synchronization Challenges and Solutions

CHALLENGE: How to do field work in the operating room (OR) SOLUTION: Become knowledgeable about and practiced in the workflow of the OR, the hospital and the medical school; be observant; ask questions; learn medicine; develop field work practices consistent with the needs of the patient and the OR staff; assess and manage health risks to field workers; fit technology to the working environment of the OR. Challenges and Solutions

CHALLENGE: How to inventory and organize the corpus of recorded information. SOLUTION: Edit and transfer recordings to video DVD showing multiple perspectives using the angle function; produce transcripts; produce a log of noticings of instructional practices. Challenges and Solutions

CHALLENGE: How to inventory and organize the corpus of recorded information. SOLUTION: Edit and transfer recordings to video DVD showing multiple perspectives using the angle function; produce transcripts; produce a log of noticings of instructional practices. Challenges and Solutions

CHALLENGE: How to collaborate with team members in the analysis of the collected materials SOLUTION: Distribute video DVDs and transcripts to the project team; apply commonly-used methods of Conversation Analysis (CA) to the data; communicate with team members by email and telephone; meet twice a year to work on data. In the future, we hope to maintain an online discussion forum an available application (e.g., Knowledge Forum, BSCW). This will be a space in which LSI researchers and surgical educators will discuss identified actions and explore their significance, both in terms of what these actions accomplish, how they work communicatively and their relevance to education. Challenges and Solutions

CHALLENGE: How to create a community of scholarship interested in and capable of doing detailed, descriptive analysis of instructional practices SOLUTION: Invite social scientists, educational researchers and designers who do video-based studies to participate in the annual DataFest workshop where they are given the opportunity to share data with the project team and work with the project team to improve their analytical skills Challenges and Solutions
