Sea Level Change Concept Maps

Overview Overarching Concept: Changes in sea level have occurred in the past, are occurring now, and will continue to occur. Evidence for changes in the past: 1. The geologic record provides evidence for past changes in ice sheets and sea level. a. The geologic record provides evidence of past glaciations. b. Many features of today's landscapes are the result of past glacial activity. c. The geologic record provides evidence of past changes in sea levels. 2. Fossils provide evidence of past life and past environments. a. The distribution of fossils provides evidence of past changes in sea levels. 3. Isotopes provide evidence of past changes in temperature, glaciation and sea level. Causes of sea level change: 1. Temperature fluctuations result in the formation and melting of ice sheets. 2. Sea level change is primarily the result of the changes in the volume of water contained in continental ice sheets. Impacts of sea level change: 1. Fluctuations in sea level change the shapes of shorelines. 2. Changes in sea level affect habitats and the flora and fauna they support. a. Sea level changes may have been responsible for mass extinctions in the past. 3. Changes in sea level impact humans. Nature of science: 1. Scientists use multiple lines of evidence to learn about the past.

Students will be introduced to global warming, the effects of rising temperatures and sea level change. Global Ups and Downs: Changing Sea Level Lesson 1Lesson 2Lesson 3Lesson 4Lesson 5Lesson 6 Temperature fluctuations result in the formation and melting of ice sheets.

Lesson 1 – intro Students will be introduced to global warming, the effects of rising temperatures and sea level change.

Lesson 2 - Experimenting with Ice Melt Students will understand that: Sea level change is primarily the result of changes in the volume of water contained in continental ice sheets. Temperature fluctuations result in the formation and melting of ice sheets.

Lesson 3 – Glacial Evidence Students will understand that: The geologic record provides evidence of past glaciations. Many features of today's landscapes are the result of past glacial activity. Temperature fluctuations in the past have resulted in the formation and melting of ice sheets.

Lesson 4 – Fossil Evidence The students will understand that: Fossils provide evidence of past life and past environments, The distribution of fossils provides evidence of past changes in sea levels. Isotopes provide evidence of past changes in temperature, glaciation and sea level. Changes in sea level affect habitats and the flora and fauna they support. Sea level changes may have been responsible for mass extinctions in the past. Scientists use multiple lines of evidence to learn about the past.
