Project to write a PILC BCP RFC: TCP Over Wireless December 2000 Hiroshi Inamura, Max Hata NTT DoCoMo Gabriel Montenegro Sun Microsystems

Why a TCP over wireless document? Aid uniformity in installed base of TCP implementations in handsets. ex. 15 million in Japan for current i-mode There is little information source where WAP will be going Internet convergence in WAP2.0 The BCP already overdue for one year Initial set of volunteers from WAP-NG

Background WAP forum WPG-NG is completing drafting TCP specification for handsets, based on optimization techniques from IETF/PILC. Efforts have been made to find an optimal set of techniques for a wide range of wireless networks, ranging from slow networks to high speed networks like 2.5G/3G. During the process, a number of valuable vision, ideas and data have been accumulated in order to apply the optimization techniques to wireless networks. Now, time to put them into a BCP, entitled “ TCP Over Wireless ” to be shared by wider wireless and networking community.

Objective of the BCP: “ TCP Over Wireless ” Provide an overview document with relevant pointers to other relevant PILC work. Ensure the goal of WAP-NG; Internet Convergence Provide recommendations for wireless networking community

Scope More general perspective than TCP specification in WAP Provide overview, define domain and requirements and present a solution A short and succinct document with references to the other PILC documents Identify which of the considerations remain research topics. Research topics will be explicitly flagged as not part of any recommendations.

Task team members Support from within the WPG-NG/WAP working group results in this informal activity Volunteers from the working group Chief Editor: Hiroshi Inamura - DoCoMo Gabriel Montenegro - Sun Joby James - MotorolaJames - Motorola Masahiro Hara - FujitsuHara - Fujitsu William Gilliam - HP … and others

Schedule Kick off and go-ahead from PILC IETF Meeting, San Diego Dec. 15, 2001 Develop outline of the Doc Mid Jan, 2001 Proceed drafting WAP London, Feb.5-9, 2001 Publish ID 1 Mid Feb, 2001 Publish ID 2 March 1, for IETF meeting, March 18-23, 2001, Minneapolis
