2. Careers in Earth Science There are many jobs that require a knowledge of earth science. (And most of them pay pretty well!) This list doesn’t include all of them, but it does cover a good spread.

3. Careers in Earth Science Speleologist Scientists who study caves. How they formed, what lives in them, and how big they are.

4. Careers in Earth Science Mineralogist Scientists who study rocks and minerals. It sounds boring, but this can lead to careers with things like lasers and creating artificial gemstones.

5. Careers in Earth Science Volcanologist Scientists who study volcanoes. These scientists try to learn how to predict eruptions and what kinds of damage lava can do to try and help people be safe.

6. Careers in Earth Science Seismologist Scientists who study earthquakes. They do this not just to help predict them, but to also learn what kinds of damage earthquakes can do so we can build better buildings.

7. Careers in Earth Science Stratigraphist Scientists who study the different strata, or layers, of rocks and soil. These scientists are often hired to try and find the best locations to look for oil and other valuable resources.

8. Careers in Earth Science Hydrologist Scientists who study the way water moves through its cycle. They’re often hired to find the best way to use water sources like underground aquifers, and to find out what kinds of chemicals may be in a water source.

9. Careers in Earth Science Meteorologist Scientists who study weather. A lot of T.V. weathermen are meteorologists. Meteorologists don’t just predict daily weather. They also try to understand what causes dangerous storms and how we can keep safe.

10. Careers in Earth Science For a lot of the rest of class, we’re going to play a game. Mr. C. is going to have each one of you come up and sit in a chair facing the class. One of the careers is going to go up on the screen. The person facing the class will have to try and guess what the career is by asking the rest of you only yes or no questions. The person guessing can’t just ask “am I a volcanologist?” and run through the list. They have to ask questions about what the person does. Before the end of class, Mr. C. is going to hand out a vocab crossword for all your terms from chapter 1. This crossword will be due Friday.
