2 Political -Took control of Georgia -Made laws that prevented torture and let peasants buy themselves out of serfdom -Gave Russia a constitution

3 Political -Made the eight ministries so that Russia would have a more stable government -Gained land as part of Poland and Warsaw -Tried to abolish serfdom but failed

4 Political -Formed an alliance with Francis I of Austria and Fredrick William III of Prussia, otherwise known as the Holy Alliance -The purpose of this alliance was to promote the influence of Christian principles in the affairs of nations -Sadly it accomplished little and became the symbol of conservatism and repression in Central and Eastern Europe

5 Social -Defeated France’s Napoleon Bonaparte -Waged wars with Sweden, Turkey, and Persia -Was Tsar for 24 years

6 Social -Improved diplomatic relationships -Rose to power in 1801 after the murder of his father, Paul I. -Alexander I was crowned Tsar when he was 23.

7 Social -He was very popular -Public education was made free -Removed the ban on foreign books

8 Economic -Improved foreign commerce -Allowed permission of transit trade with Europe -Opened Russian ports to British trade

9 Economic -Established a tax policy -Made it so that foreign civilians could own land -Made a milita

10 Economic -Started the military settlements, which were villages that combined military service and farming -Set up a Russian Parliament -Brought financial changes

11 Personal Life -Born on December 12, 1777 in St. Petersburg - Died of a cold that developed into typhoid on - November 19, 1825 -Died in Taganrog, Russia -Was eldest son of Grand Duke Paul Petrovich -Grand son of Catherine the Great

12 Death When opened in 1920’s his coffin was found empty His sudden death caused rumors that he faked his death to become a monk
