3 Reader’s Response: Journal #1 (after Chapter 1)
Write about Zits. What have we learned about his life and backstory so far? How would you describe his voice (personality)? How does he describe himself? What does Zits want- what is his motivation? How do you feel about Zits? Do you relate to him in any way? Do you feel empathy for him?

5 Journal #2: Write about the importance of names. How do the names define us? Write about your name. Who gave you your name? Do you know why? What is the story behind your name? Do you like your name? What are some other names (like nicknames) you have been given? Why? How do you feel about these other names?

6 REVENGE: the action of inflicting hurt or harm on someone for an injury or wrong suffered at their hands.

(Justify your response!) *What questions do you have? Predictions?? **Refer to the rubric for what is expected in a level 4 journal entry.

GUIDED QUESTIONS TO GET YOU STARTED: Think about what he is learning, how he is changing. React to shooting Junior, who was already dead. Do you think Zits should slit the young boy’s throat? Should he kill the foster father who abused him? What point about revenge is this chapter making? Why doesn’t Crazy Horse participate in the desecration of the soldiers’ bodies? *You will be sharing this entry with a partner!

Find and analyze 6 more examples of figurative language (use your FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE TRACKER) by Thursday, October 30. THEME BENCHMARK: Thursday, October 30 GROUP ACTIVITIES THURSDAY AND FRIDAY!!!

13 Journal #5: (Chapt. 1-13) Write about how Zits is changing. Make sure you are using textual evidence (specific examples) to explain your thoughts! Think about each “flight” and what it has taught Zits. Think of quotes you could use to support the fact that he is thinking about life differently.

14 Journal #6: *Today’s journal is a reflection piece. Write about your performance first quarter in English II. Where were your strengths? In what ways do you need to improve? How are you feeling about the novel? *Set two attainable goals for English II this quarter.

Why do you believe acts of terrorism happen?

17 DISCUSSION Why do you think Abbad commits an act of terrorism? Justify your answer with a quote. When Alexie was writing Flight, why do you think he decided to make Abbad a terrorist? What if Abbad did not commit an act of terrorism? How would that change Zits’ journey and they story?

18 JOURNAL 7: *What mystery is finally solved for Zits in the final flight? How do you think this new knowledge will impact Zits’ future and outlook on life? *What is the theme of this final story? What insight does this final flight give us about humanity?

19 Journal 8: Write a final reflection on Flight. How do you feel about the ending? How would you rate the novel? What flight did you find the most interesting? Why? Which flight had the most impact on Zits? Why?

20 PERSUASIVE ESSAY Which flight was the most important to Zits’ journey? Which flight do you feel will impact his future the most? You need to justify your response with at least two reasons why this flight was the most important.
