2 Chapter/Fraternity History Review When, where and in what room was Pi Kappa Alpha founded? Who are the Junior Founders? Who was the main organizer and spirit of the founding? Who are the members of the Virginia Circle? Which convention decided to expand north of the Mason Dixon Line? When was Memorial Headquarters dedicated? What is the official quarterly publication of Pi Kappa Alpha? Who started the publication?

4 International Fraternity Over 200 chapters 30 plus support staff members 180 plus alumni associations Hundreds of volunteers

5 Early Fraternity Changes An individual chapter acted as the Fraternity’s governing body Theron Hall Rice proposed a government of individual delegates This proposal established Pi Kappa Alpha’s first board of directors This board would eventually be composed of mostly alumnus volunteers

6 Fraternity Headquarters Smythe elected to secretary/treasurer First office opened Smythe’s home of Charleston, South Carolina Smythe produced the Journal – the Fraternity’s first publication Smythe moved headquarters to Atlanta Later the headquarters moved to Memphis, Tennessee in 1954 Present-day Memorial Headquarters opened in Memphis in 1988

7 International Convention Occurs every summer of even-numbered years Each chapter and alumni association can send members Each group in good standing is allowed one voting delegate Convention action is required to: Revoke charters Modify the Ritual Adopt resolutions Publish laws Elect members to the Supreme Council

8 Supreme Council The Supreme Council performs certain functions on behalf of the Fraternity between conventions. Composed of mostly alumnus volunteers but include some student members. The Supreme Council: Approves the Fraternity’s finances Appoints other international officers Appoints an executive to handle the Fraternity’s affairs Approves charter applications from new chapters

9 Volunteer Support Divided into regions Each region includes a combined total of up to 25 chapters with alumni associations The Regional President is a volunteer alumnus who communicates with: Chapter advisors House Corporation Officers Alumni Association Representatives

10 Professional Staff Managed by the Executive Vice President Operates out of Memorial Headquarters in Memphis, TN The professional staff handles tasks associated with: Serving over 200 chapters Serving numerous local and regional alumni groups Real Estate PIKE University Expansion Marketing Etc.
