Hebrews

Some question the authorship of Hebrews because the style and language are so different from Paul’s other letters. The ideas and doctrines closely relate to Paul’s teachings. Joseph Smith regarded Paul as the author of the epistle to the Hebrew brethren If Paul was the author then it must have been written before his death in about A.D. 65.

Levitical Order Leviticus announces the Mosaic system Paul shows how the gospel grew out of the soil of the Levitical order Intended to bridge those in the wilderness of carnality “Hebrew…is to the New Testament what Leviticus is to the Old:”

Mosaic law no longer needed Christ fulfills all requirements Christ atones for all mankind Crossing over into the “rest” of the Lord “Hebrews is more Christ centered”

Hebrews Historical Background: *There was a sharp disagreement between Gentile and Jewish Christians over whether or not Saints were subject to the Law of Moses. *One reason for the book of Hebrews was to encourage Jewish converts to remain faithful to the gospel and not revert to their Old Testament way of life. *The New Testament was in the process of preparation and nearly 3 centuries passed before it was accepted as standard, so the Old Testament was the only scripture available to the Christians.

The Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Hebrews In the Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Hebrews: * Adding to Paul’s teaching the fact that Jesus Christ, under the Father, is superior to all things. *Jesus is authorized to fulfill the old covenant of the law and administer the new covenant of the gospel * Shows how Christ is the fulfillment of the Mosaic system and the reality in Jesus of Nazareth and his atoning sacrifice..

Christ was offered to bear the sins of many. Those that look for him will find him at the 2 nd coming. Christ is the mediator of the new covenant. Testimony of Paul to the Hebrews:
