3 Listening Comprehension Magazine Articles Tell about current events and Often include dialogue from interviews with real people As I read “A Dinosaur Lives, Virtually” listen carefully to learn about new developments in the study of dinosaur fossils.

4 Nonfiction Texts Nonfiction texts give facts. In a nonfiction text, some facts and ideas are more important that others.

5 To understand nonfiction text, you need to identify the most important ideas, or the main ideas. A lot of times, the first sentence in a paragraph tells you the main idea for the whole paragraph.

6 DETAILS : Pieces of information that support main idea DETAILS : Often author states main idea in topic sentence/ May appear at beginning of a nonfiction passage Identifying main idea & details will help you better understand what you read

7 Summarizing What You Read When you read, pause periodically to summarize sections of text. Remember to look for the main ideas in each section of text.

8 To paraphrase is to retell what you have read in your own words Without changing the meaning Replace some words with synonyms Change the order of some words with ideas Be careful not to change the meaning of the text. Keep your paraphrased passage about the same length as the original

9 Paraphrase Example 1:Original Sentence Long ago, people believed that the huge ancient bones they found were the remains of mythical creatures. Words replaced with synonyms In the past, people thought that the gigantic old bones they discovered were the remains of legendary beasts. Word order Changed When people discovered gigantic old bones in the past, they thought they had found the remains of legendary beasts.

10 Example 2: Paraphrase Example 2ORIGINAL SENTENCE We know of more than 1,000 species of dinosaurs. More dinosaurs are being discovered every year. On a piece of paper and with your partner rewrite the sentence in example 2 replace with synonyms: Discuss how you could change with word order change. Look at example on next slide.

11 Example 2: Word order change More than 1,000 kinds of dinosaurs have been identified, and every year more dinosaurs are uncovered. Think Aloud: When you paraphrase, replace some words with synonyms. Also try changing the order of some words in the sentence. Make sure the meaning of the text is not changed.

14 If a creature roamed an area, it wandered around there. What destinations would you like to roam?

15 Something massive is very large and heavy. Why might a massive flag symbolize our country?

16 If something is submerged, it is beneath the surface of a body of water. What aspects of a diver’s suit are useful when submerged?

17 Something elegant is graceful and pleasing to look at. Could a gorgeous dress look elegant? Explain.

18 Obstacles are things that get in your way when you are going somewhere or trying to reach a goal. How could an obstacle lead to misfortune?

19 Something that is complicated has many parts that are connected in ways to make it hard to understand. Why would it be complicated to reconstruct a dinosaur skeleton?

20 Something that is eerie is strange and makes people feel afraid. Would a festive fair feel eerie?
