Core Laboratories Elizabeth Fini

Research Support Organization at USC University Level (President/Provost) School Level (Deans) Department Level (Academic/Institute) (Chairs/Directors) Research Centers and Core Resources

Southern California Clinical & Translational Science Institute Provides Research Expertise, Support for Translation, Human Studies & Clinical Trials, Statistics & Data Management, Training. –Clinical Translation –Research Development –Translational Research Informatics –Community Engagement –Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Resources –Education, Career Development, and Ethics –Preclinical Translation and Regulatory Support International Center for Regulatory Science(Frances Richmond)

Research Core Facilities & Resources Two Types: 1. Laboratory Cores –Provide specialized instrumentation and technical services, not possible to support in a single lab –Examples: Imaging Lab, DNA Sequencing Lab, Proteomics Lab 2. Specialized Expertise –Provide disciplinary expertise and services –Examples: Statistical Support, Regulatory Support

Research Core Resources at USC Usually located and managed within a Department Each Core Resource is directed by a faculty member with expertise in the technology or discipline School or Department pays start-up costs Ongoing School or Departmental subsidy University often provides for equipment start-up or equipment upgrades Investigator pays fee for service Open equally to all investigators

Grant Supported Core Resources Many core resources are supported by “Center” grants or “Core” grants (usually NIH) Each grant supported “Module” is directed by a senior faculty member with expertise in the area Grants pay salary of technical staff, support instrumentation maintenance, provide some centralized supplies – therefore, service fee is reduced May also buy pieces of the core resource on a grant Priorities for use (who is served, and who is served first), and access (what projects are first)
