The World’s Desire for a Deliverer 4

What is Biblical Deliverance? John 3:16: For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 1 Samuel 17:47: All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the LORD saves; for the battle is the LORD's, Deuteronomy 31:8: The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Hebrews 13:5: God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” 5

What Is It About Us That Makes Us Objects of God’s Deliverance? Psalm 18:19-20a: He brought me out into a spacious place; He rescued me because He delighted in me. The LORD has dealt with me according to my righteousness. Deuteronomy 23:14: For the LORD your God moves about in your camp to protect you and to deliver your enemies to you. Your camp must be holy, so that he will not see among you anything indecent and turn away from you. 6

What Is It About Us That Makes Us Objects of God’s Deliverance? Psalm 149:4: For the LORD takes delight in his people; he crowns the humble with salvation. 1 Corinthians 1:30: It is because of him [God] that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness & redemption. Acts 4:12: Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved. 7

Who Gets Delivered? Job 36:15: But those who suffer he delivers in their suffering; he speaks to them in their affliction. Psalm 34:7: The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them. Psalm 18:27: You save the humble. Psalm 72:12: For he will deliver the needy who cry out, the afflicted who have no one to help. Joel 2:32: And everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved; for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be deliverance, as the LORD has said, among the survivors whom the LORD calls. 8

Remember “To recall to the mind by an act or effort of memory; think of again; to retain in the memory; keep in mind;” By remembering what God has done in the past, do we believe it enough to trust Him today and into the future? 9

How to Remember 10

How to Remember John 3:16: For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For approximately 1,100 years – the period that the Old Testament was written - more than 20 different people prophesied or referenced promises of the coming Messiah of which virtually all were fulfilled by Jesus 11

Who to Remember He wants us to know that not only is it Him doing the delivering – He wants us to know the One who is doing the delivering. 12

Who to Remember Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” He wants us to remember where He’s taken us from, so we’ll trust in where He’s taking us to 13

It’s Personal Old Testament –remembering God’s deliverance of the Nation of Israel – a corporate deliverance King David – a “Man After God’s Own Heart” God’s deliverance was not just for the Nation of Israel – it was for him – it was a personal deliverance Over 50 times does he use some form of the word “deliver” in the Psalms, and it is almost always a personal reference – how God delivered him from his enemy. 14

The Nation of Israel God’s covenant with Abram that was confirmed with Isaac and Jacob The captivity of the Egyptians Details of God’s Deliverance of the Nation of Israel from the Egyptians The Ten Commandments/The Law 15

An Appreciation for God’s Deliverance John 10:9: “I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.” Psalm 136:12: with a mighty hand and outstretched arm; His love endures forever. Ezekiel 33:11: ‘As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live. Turn! Turn from your evil ways!’ 16

The Heart of The Deliverer It is God who arms me with strength (32) He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; He enables me to stand on the heights. (33) He trains my hands for battle; (34) You give me Your shield of victory, and Your right hand sustains me; You stoop down to make me great. (35) You broaden the path beneath me, so that my ankles do not turn (36) You armed me with strength for battle; You made my adversaries bow at my feet. (39) You made my enemies turn their backs in flight (40) Psalm 18 17

The Certainty of Deliverance Deuteronomy 32:39: ‘See now that I myself am He! There is no god besides me. I put to death and I bring to life, I have wounded and I will heal, and no one can deliver out of my hand.” Psalm 34:19: A righteous man may have many troubles, but the LORD delivers him from them all; Isaiah 43:13: Yes, and from ancient days I am he. No one can deliver out of my hand. When I act, who can reverse it?" 2 Corinthians 1:10: He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us, 18

Who Was Delivered? Luke 24:7: The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, be crucified and on the third day be raised again. Romans 4:25: He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification. Luke 1:74-75: to rescue us from the hand of our enemies, and to enable us to serve him without fear in holiness and righteousness before him all our days. 19
