2 Drug- Any substance (other than food) that can change the structure or function of the body or mind Example- cocaine and heroin Medicine- A drug that prevents, treats, or cures illnesses, or eases its symptoms Example- Tylenol, antibiotics Reasons we use medications: Prevent Diseases example- vaccines Fight Germsexample- antibiotics Relieve Painexample- ibuprofen Treat other medical conditionsexample- cold medication

3 Medicines that can be used safely with a doctors written permission Example- antibiotics All drugs are tested for safety and approved by the Food and Drug Administration. The FDA also decides which drugs are prescription and over- the-counter.

4 Preparations of dead or weak germs that are most commonly injected into the body causing it to make antibodies. Examples- polio, measles, chicken pox Drugs made by microorganisms to stop or kill other microorganisms (germs) Only can be used against bacterial infections. Examples- penicillin, amoxycillin, cipro Prescription drugs should only be used by the person they are prescribed for because everyone has a different body chemistry, body size, symptoms, possible allergies, etc. Drugs used to treat severe or chronic pain Examples- Tylenol with codeine,Vicodin, Oxycontin

It can multiply (greatly increase) the effects, weaken the effects or cancel each other out! The physical and mental need for a drug Mixing alcohol with tranquilizers is a multiplier effect!

OTC drugs are only safe when used according to the directions and prescription drugs are only used safely when used by the person they are prescribed for! 10 Always read the label for directions and potential side-effects- especially OTC drugs! Check the seal before opening the drug Check the expiration date and throw away all medication that has expired. Never take a drug that is prescribed for another person Let your doctor know right away if you experience any problems with prescription drugs.
