Be Safe on the Street! nyc.gov/dot

ALWAYS STOP at the curb and check for traffic EVEN IF you see a white walking figure Why should you check for traffic if the signal is in your favor? LOOK both ways Cross when the way is clear AND the signal is in your favor KEEP LOOKING as you cross! What are you looking for?

STOP at the corner and look both ways Why look both ways on a one- way street? Does the driver see you? What can you do to make the driver see you? Cross ONLY when you’re sure it’s safe KEEP looking as you cross

Why do you sometimes cross in the middle of the block? How can you do it safely? STOP at the curb – be sure parked cars stay parked STOP at the edge of the parked cars and LOOK both ways Cross ONLY when you are sure NO traffic is coming KEEP looking as you cross *Crosswalks are the best place to cross – drivers expect you to cross there

Make sure drivers can see you when you are crossing the street During the day, wear bright colors Wear white or light colors after dark At night, retro-reflective items, like zipper pulls, bracelets or tape, shine the light back to drivers. Attach one to your backpack or clothes.

If you see someone crossing distracted, speak up! Make eye contact with drivers Look up when you cross the street Put your cellphones, music and games AWAY! Middle school students admit that – 50% of them talk on a cell phone while they walk – 40% listen to music while walking Teen pedestrian safety injuries are going up across the country. Could distractions have something to do with this?
