3 SWCOLT 2008: SCHNEIDER Abstract This presentation will demonstrate how podcasting can be used as ways of speaking activities for students and delivering audio materials from teachers. Although examples are shown from university Japanese classes, the idea can be implemented in any foreign language at any level. Participants are encouraged to ask questions throughout the session and the session will be interactive. Focus: All Languages: in English, examples in Japanese. Topic: Technology

11 SWCOLT 2008: SCHNEIDER About Podcasting Everybody carries an iPod -> Fits students’ life style It is an economical way to access authentic materials, especially for advanced level students It is possible for students’ to publish their work Delivery of materials from teacher to students has become easier Community beyond classroom

12 SWCOLT 2008: SCHNEIDER Podcasts are internet radio/video programs played with personal computer and often with mobile devices. From today’s presentation, the application to play podcast, exception of iTunes U, need not be iTunes. And mobile device need not be iPod. Even some cell phones and PDA can play podcasts.

35 SWCOLT 2008: SCHNEIDER Reflections Students’ knowledge of audio editing Occasional technical problems: upload problems possibly due to the school network. There should be a separate password for students to upload without the chance of modifying account information. One half of second year students and one quarter of first year students became subscribers. Copyright material Intellectual property issues
