TIB-TID insertion test into the CMS Tracker cylinder ________________________________________________________ Tracker week july 04 Francesco.Palmonari@pi.infn.it

Summary: - introduction & test description - TIB-TID single barrel sliding onto aligned Pisa cradles - Pisa cradles sliding onto the “Antti Chariot” - TIB-TID barrels sliding onto the TOB inside rails - sliding impact on TIB-TID internal alignment evaluation - modifications to be implemented on the Pisa cradles - conclusions ________________________________________________________ Tracker week july 04 Francesco.Palmonari@pi.infn.it

________________________________________________________ Tracker week july 04 Francesco.Palmonari@pi.infn.it Introduction: this test required - the full scale tracker cylinder mock-up - the TOB mock-up (modified to host both TIB-TID FW & BW barrels) - the “Antti chariot” The test has been carried out at CERN building 186 in collaboration with A.Onnella et al. & C.Lasseur et al. - All TIB final barrels (without precisions parts) - A mock-up (made out of wood) of the TID service cylinder - 4 cradles (2-in & 2-out) from Pisa

________________________________________________________ Tracker week july 04 Francesco.Palmonari@pi.infn.it - The tracker cylinder will have 2 internal rails (from now on TOB rails) - The TOB will have 2 internal rails (from now on TIB rails) - TOB rails have Y>0 while TIB rails have Y=0 Test description

________________________________________________________ Tracker week july 04 Francesco.Palmonari@pi.infn.it - The “Antti Chariot” extends the tracker cylinder TOB rails - The Pisa cradle-in extends the TIB rails - The Pisa cradle-out TIB rails matches the ones of the cradle-in In this way, the Pisa cradle-out (carrying a TIB-TID FW or BW barrel) “lands” on the “Antti Chariot”; slide on the “chariot” until matching the cradle-in TIB rails and at this point the TIB-TID barrel can slide until reaching his final position inside the already installed TOB. Test description

TIB-TID single barrel sliding onto aligned Pisa cradles ________________________________________________________ Tracker week july 04 Francesco.Palmonari@pi.infn.it To check the TIB-TID feet we match together two Pisa cradles (one in and one out) and we align them. We notice that the feet allow a smooth enough sliding on to the overall length of the cradle rails. 6 mm (detail of a TIB-TID feet) The final barrels will come together with their service disk. The shape of the service disk will close the external end and limit the access during the insertion, this was not tried in our tests

Pisa cradles sliding onto the “Antti Chariot” ________________________________________________________ Tracker week july 04 Francesco.Palmonari@pi.infn.it Pattino mobile modificato “Antti chariot” rails aligned to the tracker cylinder TOB rails “chariot” wheels details: - levelling feet - dumped wheels “landing” of a cradle on the “chariot”

Pisa cradles sliding onto the “Antti Chariot” ________________________________________________________ Tracker week july 04 Francesco.Palmonari@pi.infn.it Original cradle feetModified cradle feet (fixed end) Modified cradle feet (slot end) The fixed end feet allow only rotation The slot end feet allow also some transverse translation to compensate for any possible deformation (“Antti chariot” or cradle itself) For this test we modify one Pisa cradle

Pisa cradles sliding onto the “Antti Chariot” ________________________________________________________ Tracker week july 04 Francesco.Palmonari@pi.infn.it Piastra di collegamento al cradle We use the TOB push-pull device clamping some adaptor pieces to our cradle TIB rails matching detail inside TOB mock-up. Special pieces are made (NB: had ~1.4 cm left/right length difference of the connection pieces) Connection piece

TIB-TID barrels sliding onto the TOB inside rails ________________________________________________________ Tracker week july 04 Francesco.Palmonari@pi.infn.it Entrance on the TOB of the TIB-TID BW barrel (at this point in the final we will not see such a big portion of the TOB because of the service disk ) Detail of the stop piece located on the TIB rails inside TOB TIB-TID barrels before reaching their final position at the stop piece (NOT corresponding to the centre of the tracker cylinder)

sliding impact on TIB-TID internal alignment evaluation ________________________________________________________ Tracker week july 04 Francesco.Palmonari@pi.infn.it We had the time to take a survey, based on the inner flanges diameters of the Layer 4 & layer 1 of the TIB-TID FW barrel. We measure these circles in two position of the FW barrel separated by a sliding of about 70 cm on the TIB rails of the TOB mock-up. The survey was performed thanks a theodolite by personnel of the CERN survey group (C.Lasseur). They provide us a report that can be found in EDMS Doc. Num. 482095. Main indication of this survey are that: - relative distances between L4 & L1 changes by no more then 30  m - the effect of sliding was a shift the common centre of the circles by 300  m (in more details a small rotation, i.e. twist, around CMS +Z) End rail target adaptor on the tracker cylinder for definition of fhe reference system Used optical target

Lessons learned: ________________________________________________________ Tracker week july 04 Francesco.Palmonari@pi.infn.it - Add attach points for lifting up & down the cradles - Add longitudinal reinforcement for walk and to dump vibrations - Remove 3 arch on the top part - Remove 4 feet support/cradle (i.e. 4 feet/cradle only not 8) - Make 4 new adjustable feet supports/cradle - Make 4 new feet (the sliding part of it)/cradle - Make and install 2 adaptor pieces/cradle for the push-pull machine - Move the position of 2 cradle-in feet towards inside (for chariot removal) - Change the rail supports from 10 pieces to 2 (6 more support to be made) - Add guided attaching system between cradle in & out -Machining of the lateral block to avoid left/right differences - (barrels modifications) TIB-TID feet dimensions to account for spacers and clearances TIB-TID feet rest position (add a spring to avoid rotation in case of contact loss) define the way a barrel clamp to the cradle during transportation -(procedure modification) allow the possibility to realign by direct match

Conclusions ________________________________________________________ Tracker week july 04 Francesco.Palmonari@pi.infn.it Pattino mobile odificato in posizione nominale (al centro della slot quindi “corretta”) Spotted and solved many problems Have now a better understanding of a “final procedure” Modified in situ 1 cradle (over 4) to get the prove of concept of : - TIB-TID single barrel sliding onto aligned Pisa cradles - Pisa cradles sliding onto the “Antti Chariot” - TIB-TID barrels sliding onto the TOB inside rails - sliding impact on TIB-TID internal alignment evaluation Have to implement the cradles modifications (by end of september ?) and possibly repeat the exercise with final tracker cylinder and final TID service cylinder (november ?)
