2 The Silver Tsunami The baby boomer generation began turning 65 in 2011; 76 million Americans were born between 1945 and 1964 The number of people 65 and older will double between 2010 and 2050 The number of people 85 and older will increase four-fold in that time range

3 Current System Already Underwater Many boomers will live active lives well into their 80s and 90s Presently 7,000 geriatricians in the U.S.; 20,000 will be needed to keep pace Nurses, physical therapists, dentists and other health professions are sorely needed What are the alternatives to cope with this wave of people?

4 Aging in Place: A New Solution Helping seniors age in place developing into a nationwide grassroots movement More than 90 neighbor-helping-neighbor, village approaches in place, with more developing from California to Massachusetts Run largely by volunteers, funded by grants and membership fees

5 Benefits of Aging in Place Eases nursing home, assisted living capacity limits Seniors aging in place continue paying property taxes, shop, eat out and have more local economic impact Provides financial relief, peace of mind for adult children helping to care for their parents Keeps seniors in their home neighborhoods where they continue to contribute to their communities

6 My Own Home: Moscows Answer New, Moscow based 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization Provides services to enable adults to grow old in their own homes –Handyman, changing light bulbs –Yard and garden, shoveling snow –Computer and cell phone support –Social activities, field trips –Some free, some have charges, all are vetted Funded with membership fees, grants and private donations
