Aug. 18-19 2006CIG Magma Dynamics Workshop And now, a word from our Sponsor…. What is CIG? Marc Spiegelman (Columbia Univ) Mike Gurnis (Caltech)

Aug. 18-19 2006CIG Magma Dynamics Workshop What is CIG? A partnership between Solid-Earth Science and Computational Science A Cooperative Agreement between Caltech and the NSF on behalf of the Geodynamics community A Software Development Team working on behalf of the geodynamics community A web-site: http://www.geodynamics.org/http://www.geodynamics.org/ What you want it to be…an opportunity…

Aug. 18-19 2006CIG Magma Dynamics Workshop Current CIG Working Groups/projects Mantle Convection Long-term Crustal Dynamics Short-term Crustal Dynamics Computational Science Geodynamo Computational Seismology Magma Migration

Aug. 18-19 2006CIG Magma Dynamics Workshop Current CIG Software Mantle Convection –CitComCU, CitComS, “1-D Geophysics” Long-term Crustal Dynamics –GALE, Ellipsis, Plasti Short-term Crustal Dynamics –PyLith, Lithomop Computational Science –Pythia/Pyre (PETSc,Sieve, StGermain, deall.II) Geodynamo –MAG (in progress) Computational Seismology –SpecFEM 3D, 1-D codes Magma Migration (??)

Aug. 18-19 2006CIG Magma Dynamics Workshop CIG Software Vision Open source, well documented & supported, and easily verified A framework of common components that allow different physics and methods to be easily coupled Enable individual scientists to build and explore new models Scalable from Laptops to Supercomputers

Aug. 18-19 2006CIG Magma Dynamics Workshop Magma Dynamics as the key Integrating problem Mid-Ocean Ridge Dynamics Reactive Channel formation Multi-physics: adds fluids to a range of solid models (both mantle and lithosphere) –Interoperability with other CIG codes? Multi-scale –Magmatic regions embedded in large scale mantle dynamics –Localization phenomena in magmatic regions –Grain Scale physics? Necessary for integrating models with Observations (particularly geochemistry and plate-boundary dynamics) Important for large class of users and developers, particularly MG&G (Ridges/MARGINS etc.) Progress, however, requires significant increase in flexibility of software tools. Mechanical melt band localizations

Aug. 18-19 2006CIG Magma Dynamics Workshop Overarching Workshop Questions What are the important/interesting scientific and computational problems we want to solve? What can we do today? (what is the current state of theory and computation in magma dynamics) What do we want to do tomorrow? How do we get there? How can CIG help? An open Discussion Workshop Goal: answer these questions and deliver concrete proposals to CIG
