Compliance and Persuasion

Small Request – Large Request In the Korean War, Chinese soldiers solicited cooperation from US army prisoners by asking them to carry out small errands. By complying to small errands they were likely to comply to larger ones. Foot-in-the-Door Phenomenon: The tendency for people who have first agreed to a small request to comply later with a larger request.

The Reciprocity Norm & Compliance We feel obliged to return favors, even those we did not want in the first place – opposite of foot-in-the-door – salesperson gives something to customer with idea that they will feel compelled to give something back (buying the product) – even if person did not wish for favor in the first place

The Norms for Helping Social Exchange Theory: Our social behavior is an exchange process. The aim is to maximize benefits and minimize costs.  Reciprocity Norm: The expectation that we should return help and not harm those who have helped us.  Social–Responsibility Norm: Largely learned, it is a norm that tells us to help others when they need us even though they may not repay us.

Bait and Switch Offer them something that appears to be very good value. This should be a real bargain, an offer they can't possibly refuse, even if they were not thinking about it. Later, replace the item with something of less value to them (and more profit to you). A car sales showroom puts a basic car outside with a very low price-tag. Once the customer is interested, the sales person trades them up to a more expensive model. Would you like to go out to this really expensive restaurant?... Oh dear, it's booked up. Never mind, we can go to the usual place

More Persuasion Foot in Door Fame Authority Door in face Scarcity

Central Route to Persuasion The central route to persuasion involves being persuaded by the arguments or the content of the message. For example, after hearing a political debate you may decide to vote for a candidate because you found the candidates views and arguments very convincing.

Peripheral Route to Persuasion The peripheral route to persuasion involves being persuaded in a manner that is not based on the arguments or the message content. For example, after reading a political debate you may decide to vote for a candidate because you like the sound of the person's voice, or the person went to the same university as you did. The peripheral route can involve using superficial cues such as the attractiveness of the speaker.

Defense against Persuasion Techniques Sleep on it—don’t act on something right away Play devil’s advocate—think of all the reasons you shouldn’t buy the product or comply with the request Pay attention to your gut feelings—if you feel pressured, you probably are
