3 Words to Know raucous- Loudy and rowdy- He came into the room voice suddenly becoming a raucous. insolently-disrespectful and rude- He spoke insolently to his Father and me. deprived-denied or stripped- Today he was deprived of his privilege to go to the blackboard because he threw chalk. privilege-right or advantage-He lost his privilege to go to recess because of his bad behavior.

4 Words to Know cynically- sarcastically and suspiciously- “His change in behavior for the good, may mean Charles may be plotting.” he said cynically. anxious-desirous, eager. I was so anxious to meet Charles’ teacher. reformation-correction or change-It looks like a reformation in Charles, he was good instead of bad today. renounced-quit, deny, or reject. He renounced corduroy overalls for blue jeans.

5 Predict Read the first paragraph of the story on page 6, then stop and make a prediction using the sticky note.

6 Visualize Read the rest of the page and all of page 7, stop and write what you visualize so far, use a sticky note to capture your written response.

7 Plot Diagram Graphic Using your story mapping graphic organizer stop and write information about the Exposition. What is the setting? How does the story start off? What events have occurred so far (not specific but overall)? Write one or two things on the lines provided on the story map graphic organizer.

8 Connect Read all of page 8 using a sticky note connect personally with what you have read so far. Think of things you identify with personally, is there a similar experience, something you heard about or know, or have read before.

9 Plot Diagram Identify another event write it on the Plot Diagram
Identify what the main conflict is. Is there more than one conflict?

10 Question Read all of page 9, then stop and using your sticky note question what is happening now in the story. From what has happened so far can you identify with the characters or with what you are reading. Write your response.

11 Clarify Stop as you continue to read and clarify additional steps of what is happening. Have things changed in the story if so what? Using your sticky notes, write why you think things have changed and predict what you think will happen next.

12 Plot Diagram Read 4 paragraphs on page 11, stop and using your plot diagram identify the climax in the story, write it down. Begin to list events for the falling action.

13 Plot Diagram Complete the story on page 11, using your plot diagram write the resolution.

14 Evaluate After you have finished the story using sticky notes write about what you read, what are ideas or thoughts you have about the character and the events. What feelings do you have since completing the story? If you could speak to any of the characters what would you say and why. Predict what you think might happen next. Explain in your words what impression this story left upon you, would you recommend reading this story and to whom?
