4 ELECTRON SHELLS (OR ENERGY LEVELS) a)Atomic number = number of protons Number of Protons = number of Electrons b)Electrons are found at different energy levels or electron shells. c)Electrons found in the outermost energy level are valence electrons and determine how the atom bonds with other atoms

5 Electrons are placed in shells according to rules: 1)The 1st shell or energy level can hold up to 2 electrons 2)Each shell thereafter can hold up to 8 electrons

25 Ionic bond – electron from Na is transferred to Cl, this causes a charge imbalance in each atom. The Na becomes (Na + ) and the Cl becomes (Cl - ), charged particles or ions.

36 Metals Form Alloys Metals do not combine with metals. They form alloys, which is a solution of a metal in a metal. Examples are steel, brass, bronze and pewter.
