2 Celebrate Success For 2014-15 Jenkins was recognized for “EXCEEDING” expected growth on our end-of-grade tests. We have received this recognition for the 3rd consecutive year. For 2014-15 Jenkins met 23/25 of our state goals (88%).

3 Report Card - C Each school gets a “report card grade” from the state. We were not happy with our grade, but I believe only one Hickory school was graded higher than us. The grade is based 80% on proficiency and 20% on growth. If 50-50 we would have had either a B or A grade.

4 Recycle any old fabric – clothes, shoes, towels, sheets – and the school will get the money we make from the recycling company.

5 Car Riders Please have orange card with child’s name in the passenger window. Please keep the card in the window until after your child loads. Please arrange car seats so we are loading your child on the passenger side.

6 Car Riders Please hang up your cell phone once you get to actual loading area. Please only enter the school parking area using the right lane (if heading north on 127). There is only 1 lane entering the school and 2 lanes exiting the school.

7 Tardies We don’t have a school bell system, so we go by the time on our computers since they are all the same. Please try to get your children to school early so traffic doesn’t make you late.

14 North Carolina Read To Achieve Goal “The goal of the State is to ensure that every student read at or above grade level by the end of third grade and continue to progress in reading proficiency so that he or she can read, comprehend, integrate, and apply complex text when needed for secondary education and career success.”

15 Read To Achieve Highlights  K-3 diagnostic reading assessment (Reading 3D)  Students take 3 rd Grade EOG in Spring 2014  Mandatory retention of third graders not performing on grade level in Reading  Summer Reading Camp in Summer 2014  Transitional 3rd/4th Class or Accelerated Class for students not successful in SRC  October 2014 Retake test for mid-year promotion

17 Summer Reading Camp  Outside of the instructional calendar  Parents or guardians will make the final decision regarding attendance  Will last 6-8 weeks, include 4 or 5 days per week, and at least 3 hours of instruction per day  Teachers will be selected based on demonstrated student outcomes in reading proficiency

18 What is Reading 3D? Reading 3D is a validated, research-based assessment—State assessment for NC Gives quick indicators of early skill development in reading Offers an in-depth look at student interaction with authentic text Measures include: phonemic awareness, phonics, sight words, fluency, and comprehension

19 What does Reading 3D offer? Paperless, efficient data collection--using the iPad Meaningful analysis and reporting for teachers, instructional coaches, and administrators Ideas and tools for planning differentiated instruction Progress Monitoring to offer reinforcement of skills- based on student need (skills addressed in small group instruction) Parent communication: Home Connect: letter three times a year; letters sent to parents of non-proficient students

20 Parent Communication Home Connect letters-sent after benchmarks three times a year (October, February, June) Look for the “running man” RED: Most support = intensive intervention needed YELLOW: Some support = strategic intervention needed Green: Goal = met or surpassed grade level expectations Be sure to help your child with suggested activities on this letter to promote reading success!

21 Title 1 We are a Title 1 school. What does that mean? Being a Title I school means receiving federal funding (Title I dollars) to supplement the school’s existing programs. The amount of $ received is based on the % of students on free or reduced lunch. Currently 49% of our Jenkins students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

22 What do we use our Title 1 money for? 1.5 teacher positions Technology Supplies Materials & Books Staff Development Parent Involvement

23 What is the “1% Set-Aside” for parental involvement? 1% of our federal allotment must be used for parent involvement. (movie night) What is our school’s Parental Involvement Policy? A document, approved by our leadership team, outlining ways we will increase parent involvement. (on school website)

24 What is the Leadership Team and which parents serve on the team? - The leadership team is composed of one teacher from each grade level, 3 support area teachers, and several parents. - We meet one Monday per month at 3:30.
