The computer should recognise the camera and let you choose where to save them. Create a new folder for your project and add your video clips. Advanced

Give each scene on your storyboard a code number. Name all the clips for each scene using the same code. Eg ‘scene2take3’ Advanced

The ‘player’ panel lets you view your video as you work on it. The ‘timeline’ lets you add, arrange and edit video and audio clips. The ‘toolbar’ or panel at the top allows you to make changes to each clip. Advanced

Use the player to view your clips as you do this. You are now ready to edit your clips, and trim, split and join them. Advanced

This lets you use just the bits you want to include. Click on a clip to select it. You can use buttons to select the start and end points. Review the clip in the player. Pause the player at your chosen points then click on the correct button. You may instead be able to use sliders to set the start and end points of your clips. Advanced

All rights reserved Cameras and photos: Editing your films You can split a long clip into shorter sections using the ‘split tool’. This is helpful if you want to split up a conversation and switch between shots. Click on a clip to select it. Review the clip in the player. Pause the player where you first want to split the clip, then click on the button. Drag the split sections to where you want them. Repeat this to split a long clip into many sections. Advanced

Play your video to make sure all the clips are at the same volume. You can choose to fade sounds in and out at the start and end of clips. Fade in at the start of a scene. Fade out at the end of a scene. It is best not to fade between clips in the same scene. Advanced

All rights reserved Cameras and photos: Editing your films The ‘Transitions’ or ‘Animations’ menu lets you choose how to change from one clip to the next. These can ‘tell’ viewers that a new scene is starting. To add an effect between Clip 1 and Clip 2, you should either: Drag your chosen effect between Clip 1 and Clip 2. Or Select Clip 2 and then select your effect. Fade in at the start of a scene. Fade out at the end of a scene. It is best not to fade video between clips in the same scene. Advanced

For a drama, this might be music or sound effects. For a documentary, it might be the narration. Import each audio clip, then drag it onto your timeline to choose where it goes. Advanced

All rights reserved Cameras and photos: Editing your films Make sure your audio does not get mixed up with important dialogue in your clips. You can choose how loud to have your dialogue and your music. This may be something you set for the whole project, not for individual clips. Advanced

Music is best not faded at the start, but fading out music works well. You can also set the start point and end point for audio clips, like you can for video. Advanced

This will help you spot where it needs editing so it flows well and looks professional. When your video is finished, you can add titles, captions and credits. Advanced
