2 Introduction to the IAAF The IAAF is the governing body for athletics, which includes such diverse disciplines as:  track & field athletics  cross country  road races  race walking The IAAF Competition Programme reflects the different aspects of the sport Basic requirements: Experienced Media Director Good co-operation with rest of Organising Committee Experienced Staff in key positions (Accreditation, Photographers, Information Distribution) Staff in sufficient number (before & during the event). All Staff and volunteers to be fully briefed Recommendations: Successful teams combine international experience with specific knowledge of national media

5 Introduction to the IAAF The wide range of countries which are successful in athletics reflects on: the number of countries who organise WAS events and the countries who send media representatives to cover athletics Universality of athletics makes it essential for IAAF to adapt depending on the type of event and local particularities

6 Planning Media Operations IAAF Media Guidelines General part and chapters for each WAS Event Site Visits Set framework for future cooperation with LOC Equipment Lists adapted for specific competition Allow to asses experience of LOC and specific needs

7 Media Operations - IAAF Specificity IAAF events are organised in a wide range of countries Our objective:  maintain high standard of facilities & services provided  allow journalists from all countries world-wide to cover the competition Implies:  Insistence on specific procedures  Obligation for LOC to provide certain services free of charge

8 Media Operations - IAAF Specificity Specific examples:  Provision of computers with free Internet access  Free broadband Internet connections in Media Centre(s)  Media Accommodation procedures can never impose full advance payment of hotel bookings

9 Adapting to Local Needs and Situations Accreditation Increased flexibility for minor events or local media Deadlines to take into account visa procedures AccommodationAcceptable price ranges differ according to: the type of WAS Event the Host Country EquipmentAdapt type & level of equipment to local situation Media InformationAdapt types & quantity of information produced directly by IAAF Press ConferencesTranslation needs, system and presentation style Photographers N. of in-field photographers
