2  What do you think you need to know before your first day on the job?

3 Topic #7.1

4  Describe how to manage the anxieties and challenges of a first day at work.  Describe how to dress for work.  Explain the purpose of orientation and distinguish among the different types of orientation programs.

5  What can you do to prepare for your first day at a new job?  Effectively deal with stress and anxiety.  Allow extra time to get to work  Take notes  Learn the company’s culture.  You can do this by observing how your coworkers and supervisors interact.

6  If you are unsure what to wear, dress conservatively.  Avoid bright colors or trendy outfits.  Keep jewelry simple.  Wear clothes that are clean.  If you are dealing with the public, wear more traditional business clothing.

7  Orientation is a program that introduces you to the company’s policies, procedures, values, and benefits.  Some companies may pair you with a mentor to help guide you through your training.  Should provide you with information on your responsibilities and state the company’s goals and policies.

9  Identify typical forms of payment.  Describe common employee benefits  Explain the role of employee performance reviews.

10  Most entry-level employees receive wages.  Wage:  A fixed amount of money paid to a worker for a set amount of time spent working.  Nonexempt Employees:  Workers who are normally paid an hourly wage and are entitled to earn overtime.  Overtime:  Pay received for working more than 40 hours in a week.  Exempt Employees:  Workers who earn a salary.  Salary:  A fixed amount of pay for a certain period of time.  Commission:  Earnings based on how much a person sells.

11  Incentive plans reward workers for their achievements.  Types of incentive plans:  Profit-Sharing Plans:  Workers receive a share of the company’s profits.  Performance Bonuses:  Reward workers for high levels of performance.

12  Benefits:  Extras that a company provides in addition to pay.  Types of Benefits:  Health  Pension Plans:  A savings plan for retirement.

13  Performance Reviews:  A meeting between you and your supervisor to evaluate how well you are doing your job.  Performance reviews are important to you and your supervisor because they can determine if you receive a promotion, pay increase, new responsibilities, and your future with the company.

14  Be aware of changes in the economy.  Keep your job-hunting network active and your skills up-to-date.  Put aside money to help you during unemployment.
