4 DIABETES FACTS From 1980 through 2007, the number of Americans with diabetes has more than tripled (from 5.6 million to 19.7 million).

5 WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?

6 BURDEN OF DIABETES Your life is forever changed! Risk of kidney failure, amputations, blindness The risk for stroke & heart attack is 2- 4 times higher in individuals with diabetes. Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the US.

7 THIS AFFECTS PEOPLE YOU KNOW AND CARE ABOUT DIE More people DIE from diabetes each year than from breast cancer and lung cancer COMBINED! 7

10 INTRODUCING YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program The most evidence-based diabetes prevention program in the world. 10

11 ARE YOU ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE? Must be at least a bit overweight Must be at risk for becoming diabetic Linda will help determine this People who already have diabetes are NOT eligible 11

12 INDIVIDUALIZED LIFESTYLE PROGRAM Program Goals: To reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes through… ≥ 7% loss of body weight and maintenance of weight loss ≥ 150 minutes per week of physical activity 12

13 THE PROGRAM Small group – discussion & education First - 16 weeks – one hour a week Then - one hour a month for the rest of the 12 months Classes can be located anywhere! YOUR place? 13

14 SAMPLE WEEKLY TOPICS Healthy eating out Becoming a fat detective Adding movement Talking back to negative thoughts Managing stress Maintaining motivation What makes this program different? 14|

16 WHAT IS THE COST FOR THE ENTIRE YEAR? 1) United Healthcare 2) Self-pay: >>> VERY GENEROUS Scholarships are available! Virtually all retired people qualify for substantial scholarships.<<< No one is ever turned away from the YMCA due to inability to pay 16
