1. Building Capacity for Water Resources Management in Southern Africa The WaterNet Regional Masters Programme in Integated Water Resource Management (IWRM) aims at educating a new generation of water managers in Southern Africa that are trained to address the complex and integrated nature of sustainable water management. The Programme integrates natural and social sciences, and draws from state-of-the-art know-how at a large number of universities and knowledge institutions in Southern Africa and beyond. WaterNet WaterNet is a regional programme aiming to strengthen the educational, training and research capacities in Eastern and Southern Africa. WaterNet is associated with the Southern African Water Partnership (GWP), and is a strategic programme of the SADC Water Sector. Programme Hosts The WaterNet IWRM programme will be hosted by the three universities in the region: University of Western Cape, South Africa, University of Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, University of Zimbabwe. Structure of the Programme The programme is modular, with a taught part of 11 modules (each module has a duration of 3 weeks), corresponding to one years study, followed by a 6 month dissertation research project, to obtain a Master Degree in IWRM. Students can opt to finish the programme after the taught part, which gives a Post-Graduate Degree in IWRM. The programme has a compulsory core of 5 modules, followed by a stream of specialisations (each consisting of 3 modules). This is followed by 2 elective modules, in order to complete the course work. Each Host University will offer the 5 core modules and 1 Specialisation programme. Two additional specialisation programmes will be offered by the University of Malawi (Water and Environment) and the University of Namibia (Water and People). Start of Programme The WaterNet IWRM programme will start in January/February 2004 at the three host institutions. Short Courses The modules in the IWRM programme can also be taken free-standing short courses. These are open for professionals, such as managers, lawyers, social workers, interested in water related issues. A special fee will be charged on a short course basis which roughly amounts to 300 USD/module, excluding travel and living expenses. Entry requirements Participants are required to have at least a good first degree at Bachelor level (BA, BSc etc.). The candidate should be able to show an orientation of his/her field of study into water related issues. Professional experience in relevant fields is an added advantage. Scholarship Support WaterNet offers 30 scholarships on a competitive basis covering the taught part (11 modules). For participants who have successfully completed the taught part, and who want to enrole for a Masters. Degree will be considered for an additional Masters Degree scholarship. How to Apply Applications are made to the WaterNet secretariat. The application includes a letter of interest, indicating the 1 st and 2 nd choice of Specialisation programme; a curriculum vitae of academic and professional experience, and a 1 A4 page motivation letter where the applicant writes why he/she wants to enrole on a Master Programme on IWRM, and motivates the choice of specialisation. Please indicate on the application form whether you wish to be considered for WaterNet scholarship support. Completed application should reach WaterNet Secretariat on or before 15 September 2003. WaterNet will select participants considering qualifications, regional and disciplinary distribution, gender balance, and balance between Specialisations. WaterNet will supply the approved applications to selected Host Institutions, who will finalise the application procedure according to local procedures and regulations.
