Warm Up 1.Where are you supposed to be when the tardy bell rings? 2.How many sections should your binder have? 3.Where can you find your homework assignment if you forgot to write it down in class? 4.How many bathroom passes do you get per 9 weeks? 5.Name one administrator. Make sure your name (1 st and last),date, block, and “warm up” are on your paper

Note taking Write title/subject to the left of the red margin line Write explanation/definition to the right of the red margin line This is called Cornell style notes

Test Taking Skills Carefully read the directions and questions Figure out what the question is asking Read each answer Slash the trash Does your answer make sense? Go back and check your answers Trust yourself

Scientific Method The Scientific method is a way in which Scientists conduct investigations There are 6 main parts of the Scientific method: 1. Purpose 2. Research 3. Hypothesis 4. Experiment 5. Analysis 6. Conclusion

1. Purpose Identify the problem. Should be a question.

2. Research Gather information about your topic

3. The hypothesis It is a prediction or an educated guess of what you think will happen Any valid (true/reasonable) hypothesis can be tested

4. Experiment Time to test your hypothesis Make a materials list. List of procedures – the steps you will take Conduct experiment Record observations

3 Variables for the Experiment 1) The independent variable – what you are testing. It is the only variable that is changed during an experiment. 2) The dependent variable – what you are measuring.

Variables 3) Constants - variables that do not change in an experiment

Collecting data – do not write When we make observations in an experiment we record this information. This is our data. Observations are anything we observe with our 5 senses. Sight, sound, taste, touch,& smell.

5. Analysis Analyze your data collected during the experiment

6. Conclusion Draw conclusion based on analysis Conclusion should either support (prove) or not support (disprove) our hypothesis.

Draw / illustrate Get a textbook and turn to page 8 Below your notes, draw figure 4 Label it Scientific Method Add the name of each step in the appropriate boxes Mnemonic device??

What did you learn? Close your binder Name the 6 steps to the scientific method If you need help, quietly brainstorm with someone near you, do not get out of your seat YouTube clips Demos - variables

Class work 1 Carefully get a workbook from the book shelf where the pencil sharpeners are Turn to page 1 Read pages 1 – 5 Answer questions 3, 4, 5, and 6 Write your answers in complete sentences Make sure your name, block, date, and CW1 are on your paper

Warm Up – write out 1. Suggested explanation for an observation 2. Organized procedure that involves making measurements and observations 3. Factor/variable in experiment that can be manipulated/changed by experimenter 4. Factor/variable in experiment that can change if other factors are changed 5. Factor/variable that does not change during experiment 6. List the 6 steps of the scientific method in order

Control Standard for comparison that shows the results of an experiment are actually due to the condition being tested

Scientific theory An explanation or model based on many tests or experiments (ex. Theory of Plate Tectonics) Scientific Law A rule that describes the behavior of something in nature (ex. Law of Superposition)

Bias A person’s own opinion Ethics A system of understanding what is good and bad

Class Work 1 1. Carefully get a workbook 2. Read pages 9-11 3. Answer in complete sentences the following questions in the margins: 4, 6-8 4. When you finish, return your workbook and get a worksheet from me 5. Use the same piece of paper 6. Answer questions 1-18 on your paper (skip definitions), please do not write on the worksheet 7. Raise your hand for any questions you may have

Homework 2 Textbook page 30, questions 1-9 Write out questions and correct answers Study warm up and today’s notes for quiz next block

You choose your activity Your choices are 1. Word wall poster – purpose, research, hypothesis, experiment, analysis, conclusion, independent variable, dependent variable, constant; with a brief description 2. Mnemonic device – write down, will hang on wall 3. Song – write down 4. Story – write down 5. Index cards for memory game – I will collect to use next week to study for the quiz

Mini-labs 1) Which dishwashing soap cleans best? 2) Which flashlight battery lasts the longest? 3) How many students are left handed/right handed?

Homework Create your own mini-lab Identify the 6 steps of a scientific method

Review Write down the six steps of the Scientific Method Give a brief description of each
