1 Preparing for the Science Gateway

Science Content Area Summary Spring 2013 2 DOMAINSCHOOL IDEAS2.7/5 ORGANIZATION2.6/5 STYLE3.2/5 CONVENTIONS3.2/5 Does Not Meet: 14% Meets: 73% Exceeds: 14%

Stages of Construction – Brainstorming the concepts (starting from scratch)  List all terms and concepts associated with the topic.  Mark up the documents and write important information in the margins Organizing the concepts in prewriting  Write them as a concept map or organized jot list. (one word or phrase)  Join like ideas on the prewrite Layout/Drafting  Begin writing the ideas from the prewrite into complete sentences in the order in which you joined them on the organizer. Revising the draft  Read through the draft making corrections, additions, deletions, etc. 3 Final Copy  Copy the final draft into your grading folder.

Understanding and Using the Information in the Gateway Documents The documents in Form 303 are typical of the documents in other Gateway Science Forms. Each Document in Form 303 matches one of the bullets in the Writing Task Before the test, review the meanings of arrows in diagrams, maps & formulas. Research indicates that arrows in scientific diagrams can have up to six different meanings. – Representation of force – Showing change – Indicating sequence – Labeling – Measuring – Showing relationships 4

Document A relates to Bullet 1: Describe a food web in detail, including at least three food chains. 6 Seven food chains are illustrated Each food chain has at least three organisms A food web consists of multiple food chains Each chain starts with plants The higher up on the food chain, the more choices of food there are What’s in this document that I can use? Every organism eventually dies and decomposes

Document B Relates to Bullet 3: Describe how carbon is cycled between living organisms and their environment. Do this now on your document. 7 What is in this document that you can use to answer any part of the prompt? Take notes in prose form that you can work into your essay. Is there any connection between the stages? What is the significance of carbon? How do plants use carbon?

Document B Relates to Bullet 3: Describe how carbon is cycled between living organisms and their environment 8 What’s in this document that I can use? Plants use carbon in photosynthesis Each stage connects to atmosphere

Document C Relates to Bullet 2: State the law of conservation of matter and energy and explain how this law applies to photosynthesis and cellular respiration. Do this now on your document. 9 What is in this document that you can use to answer any part of the prompt? Take notes in prose form that you can work into your essay. Are there any similarities in the elements? How are the equations connected? What is the connection to plants and animals for each reaction?

Document C Relates to Bullet 2: State the law of conservation of matter and energy and explain how this law applies to photosynthesis and cellular respiration. 10 What’s in this document that I can use? Conservation means saving or keeping The same elements are in each equation Each equation is the inverse of the other Plants and animals perform cellular respiration
