Type Of Disease Avian Influenza, commonly known as bird flu, is a flu infection in birds. This virus can cause infection and mutation in humans. If the mutation spreads, it can cause a worldwide epidemic.

Description Of The Disease Bird flu is lethal in poultry and fatal if a human is infected. It is also caused by type A strains of the influenza virus. Slightly more than 60% of those who have been infected have died.

History Of The Disease The first bird flu infection occurred in Hong Kong in 1997. The epidemic was related to chickens. Since then it has been reported in Asia, Africa, Europe, Indonesia, and the Pacific.

Symptoms Of The Disease Cough Diarrhea Difficulty Breathing Fever Headache Malaise Muscle Aches Runny Nose Sore Throat

Transmission Of The Disease It is caused Directly from birds or from avian influenza A virus in contaminated environments to people. Or through an intermediate host, such as a duck or a pig.

Curse or Treatments People with severe infection may need to be placed on a breathing machine. Experts recommend that persons diagnosed with avian flu be put in isolation. Doctors recommend that people get an influenza (flu) shot to reduce the chance of an avian flu virus mixing with a human flu Virus.
