1 Anticipatory Guidance - Social Emotional for Parents/Caregivers of Infants and Toddlers Exposed to Trauma INFANTTODDLER Establish safe routines for infant and be consistent Respond to a stressed toddler’s need to feel safe Rocking, cuddling, talking in soothing tones Provide more opportunities for infant to sense the world by using safe items for them to smell, taste, hear, touch Speak calmly and use reassuring tones Provide more opportunities for toddler to experience new things in a safe way Hold Toddler in lap or arms when meeting new people

2 Anticipatory Guidance – Physical Concerns for Parents/Caregivers of Infants and Toddlers Exposed to Trauma INFANTTODDLER Establish opportunities for infant to practice activities that enhance development Respond to a stressed toddler’s need to feel safe Provide time and space for infant to be on floor, sitting up in swing, high chair Utilize resources (HELP at home manual) and services (Early Intervention) to assist baby to scoot, crawl, pull up and walk and by providing more verbal cues and positive reinforcement Establish specific opportunities for toddlers to practice activities that enhance physical development Encourage toddler to take risks by providing a safe environment and sticking close to toddler during physical activity

3 Anticipatory Guidance – Cognitive Concerns for Parents/Caregivers of Infants and Toddlers Exposed to Trauma INFANTTODDLER Be intentional about helping infant derive meaning from the world Establish more opportunities to talk with infant using verbal cues and facial expressions Sooth infant externally when you see signs of self soothing Use soft voice tones and reassuring words Be intentional about providing opportunities for toddler to play Help toddler make sense of his/her experiences by naming, labeling and providing words Encourage toddler to problem solve by supporting him/her in meeting own needs

4 Anticipatory Guidance - Language Development for Parents/Caregivers of Infants and Toddlers Exposed to Trauma INFANTTODDLER Encourage infant to communicate needs Encourage toddler to communicate by modeling communication Ask questions, point to and name items and provide care when infant communicates a need Encourage infant with soothing voice and positive verbal reinforcement when infant communicates appropriately Show interest and encourage toddler to express him or herself verbally Explain your own facial expressions or changing voice tones. Be reassuring that you love and care for the toddler
