1 Networking Functions of windows NT Sever
Present by Jing Li Southeastern University

2 Table of content Windows NT Network Protocols
Windows NT Networking Services Windows NT Network Monitor. Summary.

3

4 Default Windows NT Network Protocols and their comparison
NeBEUI TCP/IP NWLink (IPX/SPX)

5 Advantage of NetBEUI Small memory overhead.
Very fast on small network. Error protection. Self configuration and self-tuning

6 Disadvantage of NetBEUI
It is not a routable protocol. Very little support for cross platform application. Very few troubleshooting tools.

7 Advantage of TCP/IP The most flexible transport protocols. Excellent cross-platform support. Direct access to Internet. Strong support for routing. SNMP support.. DHCP support. WINS support.

8 Disadvantage of TCP/IP
Difficult to administer correctly and difficult to setup. Slower than NWLink(IPX/IPX) and NetBEUI. High overhead Centralized TCP/IP domain assignment requires registration effort and cost.

9 Advantage of NWLink Easy to setup. Support routing between networks.
Faster than TCP/IP. Allows easy connection to installed NetWare servers and client.

10 Disadvantage of NWLink
Does not have an effective central addressing scheme to prevent two network from using the same address number. Shower than NetBEUI. Doesn't support SNMP( Simple Network Management Protocol).

11 NT Networking Services
Browser Service. DHCP(Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol). WINS(Windows Internet Name Service). DNS( Domain Name Service).

12 The Function of Browser Service
Identify and list the available network resources, in order for these resources to be used efficiently by sharing, that is an advantage of networked computer system. By assigning the browser role to specific computers, lowers the mount of network traffic, also frees the CPU time that each computer need to create a network resource list.

13 The Function of DHCP Centralize and manages the allocation of TCP/IP configuration information by automatically assigning IP address to computers: Automatically configure subnet mask to identify destination network ID. If it is not the same as your network ID, then forward message to gateway. Automatically configure your gateway ID address. Automatically set DNS address.

14 The Function of WINS Be used to register NetBIOS computer network names and resolve them to IP address. Sample: What is the best way to decrease TCP/IP-based network broadcast traffic? If without WINS, each computer on network has to send a broadcast message to other computer on the network. Install WINS, provide computer name to IP address resolution that reduces the broadcast traffic.

15 The Function of DNS Resolve domain name to IP address. Sample:
Need to provide an Internet name to IP address translation on TCP/IP based network, what service need to install on Windows NT Server computer? Administrator can use DNS to manage domain and computer names.

16 Network Monitor Monitor the data that is sent over network.
Collects, filters, and analyzes frames or packets. Each frame contain: Source address. Destination address. Headers from each protocol used to send the frame. Data.

17 Information captured by Network Monitor
Bar graphs Provide information on real-time network activity Session statistics. Show the conversations that are taking place on the network. Real time and cumulative. Station statistics Cumulative information on network conversation.

18 Summary: Windows NT Network Features.
Flexible Protocol Support Multiple Network Service Support. Multiple tasks to monitor network traffic .
