2 Preliminaries  Pre-class (10 constructed response points)  How much better (or worse) is America under Barak Obama’s leadership as President?  Open your notebooks.  In bullet form, pre-write a 3-paragraph essay. It must include:  A clearly stated thesis statement which incorporates the question in the answer (e.g. Obama is a(n) effective/not effective president).  At least 3 supporting details of at least 3 words each (e.g. healthcare).  Keep this pre-write in your notebooks. We will be using it again tomorrow.  Launch Excel and load your budgets you created previously. You should have a total of 20 expense categories.

3 Excel Review  Log in.  Launch Excel.  Common Interface Controls:  Menus  Toolbars  Task panes  Spreadsheet basics:  Rows (numbered horizontally)  Columns (lettered vertically)  Addresses (row and column intersections)  Data Entry  File Basics  Saving  Closing  Opening  Exiting  Justification  Left  Center  Right  Column Width  Formatting Values  Currency  Date  Fonts  Type  Size  Style

4 Excel Review (con’t.)  Move from one worksheet to another.  Select cell ranges.  Copy and paste ranges of cells and their contents.  Rename worksheets.  Move columns of cells by cutting and pasting.  Be able to use the AutoFill feature.  Be able to use the fill handle.  Be able to spot check the accuracy and consistency of numeric data.  Be able to find data and replace it.

5 Excel Review (con’t.)  Be able to insert, delete and hide columns and rows.  Be able to merge cells.  Be able to wrap text within a single cell across more than one line.  Be able to freeze the top row of a workbook.  Be able to add a graphic.

6 Focus Lesson Objectives: Calculating Values  Be able to remain on task for an extended period of time.  Be able to add formulas to a worksheet to calculate sums over defined ranges of values (by rows and columns).

7 Focus Lesson: Calculating…  Translate all expense values for each month into negative currency values.  Compute totals for each expense for the entire year in the column labeled “Total”.
