Research Starters in EBSCO Discovery Service Tutorial support.ebsco.com

Welcome to EBSCO’s Research Starters tutorial. Research Starters is a feature of EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) that quickly connects users to citable, authoritative summary articles on thousands of popular topics, including history, geography, and science. Designed to enhance the research experience, Research Starters include links to relevant articles, images, videos, and audio clips. The content is curated from a variety of high quality sources including Salem Press, Encyclopædia Britannica, and others. Let’s begin by conducting a keyword search on global warming.

If a Research Starter is available, it will appear at the top of the search results list. Please note that the Research Starters feature does not alter your search results list in any way. Simply click the More link for a topic overview.

From here, you can read the full text of the article or listen to the article using the Text-to-Speech feature. In addition, you can click the icons under the Tools menu to print, email, save, or cite the article.

Many searches include “Related” items listed at the bottom of the Research Starter placard. These are other titles that are highly relevant to your search. Clicking the link takes you directly to that Research Starter record. For example, a search for Roosevelt will retrieve the Research Starter shown.

Depending on your search term, the overview article may contain Related Information box with links to associated Research Starters. Clicking one of these links will launch the related overview article in a new browser window. Some articles also contain lateral links embedded in the full text. Clicking on a lateral link will take you to the related Research Starters record.

Finally, some Research Starters contain links to related audio clips or videos. For example, you can listen to the call of a blue whale, or watch a video showing the life cycle of a monarch butterfly. You can enlarge the video to full screen mode by clicking the diagonal arrows at the bottom right corner of the video box. If at any time you wish to return to the Basic Search screen, click the New Search link in the top toolbar.
